On October 22-23, 2024, one of the central international conferences on the problems of
coexistence and conflicts between humans and wildlife in the world, particularly in the
Carpathian region, was held in the city of Băile Tușnad in Romania. The conference aimed to
bring together various views, competencies, and experiences of experts from Europe and
other countries on the topic of the coexistence of humans and large carnivores. Discussions
and decisions made at the conference will contribute to the development of practical and
viable measures to reduce human-wildlife conflicts in a variety of natural and anthropogenic
landscapes.
The conference is organized within the framework of the CERV project (101146879)
"Coexisting with bears – Conservation needs Conversation!", financed by the European
Union and implemented with the support of the ProjectBag Association, Mayor’s Office of
Băile Tușnad and WWF-Romania. The conference was supported by the Nature FIRST
project (101060954) of the Horizon Europe program of the European Union.
In the framework of the international conference, associate professor of the Department of
Biology and Ecology of Vasyl Stefanyk National University of the Carpathians, WWF-Ukraine
expert Roman Cherepanyn presented a report on the structure and dynamics of conflicts
between humans (farmers/beekeepers) and large predators (wolves, bears, lynx) in the
Ukrainian Carpathians.
