On November 19, 2024, a public lecture was held in a hybrid format by Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor, Head of the Department of Botany of Kherson State University, expert of the NGO “Ukrainian Nature Conservation Group” (UNCG), and honored educator and scientist Ivan Ivanovych Moiseyenko. The lecture, titled “Preservation of Biodiversity at Cultural Heritage Sites On the Example of Burial Mounds” addressed key issues related to biodiversity conservation in culturally significant landscapes.
Professor Moiseyenko emphasized the importance of preserving burial mounds as unique natural areas that combine both cultural-historical and natural heritage. He explained why burial mounds serve as refugia for biodiversity, especially in the context of intensive land development. These areas are home to rare and endangered species of flora and fauna, which require special protection.
Professor Moiseyenko explained why the preservation of burial mounds is crucial not only for scientific research but also for maintaining ecological balance, especially in steppe regions, where natural plant communities are increasingly displaced by agricultural crops. While burial mounds are considered characteristic of the steppe zone, there are also burial mounds in the Carpathian region that hold significant ecological, conservation, cultural-historical, and scientific value.
